Privacy Policy — Summarit

Effective Date: February 2025

Last Updated: February 2025

Overview

Summarit is a Chrome extension that summarizes web articles, YouTube videos, and PDFs. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we access, how it is processed, and how it is stored.

Data We Access

Web Page Content

Summarit reads the text content of web pages, YouTube transcripts, and PDFs that you choose to summarize. This content is accessed only when you actively use the extension (e.g., click "Summarize").

Settings

Your preferences (processing mode, language, API keys) are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API.

How Data Is Processed

Summarit offers three processing modes. You choose which mode to use:

On-Device Mode (Default)

Content is processed entirely on your device using Chrome's built-in AI (Gemini Nano). No data leaves your browser. No login or API key is required.

Client API Mode

Content is sent directly from your browser to Google (Gemini) or OpenAI APIs using your own API key. Data flows directly between your browser and the API provider — it does not pass through our servers.

Server Mode (Development Only)

Available only in development builds. Content is sent to our server for processing. Requires authentication.

Data Storage

  • Summaries and settings are stored locally in your browser using chrome.storage.local.
  • No data is stored on our servers unless you explicitly use Server mode and choose to save.
  • Cached summaries are stored per URL and remain on your device.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, share, or transfer your data to third parties.

In Client API mode, your content is sent to Google or OpenAI per their respective privacy policies.

Summarit requests the following Chrome permissions:

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
